I read "Fade To Black" By Morgan Kearns and the book was sooo good. During my read, I was in contact with Morgan and told her about my progress and what part of her book I was at. And when I finished reading the book, she took a few minutes out to discuss her books and characters. She is so sweet and so down to earth. So I took the chance and asked her if she would be available to answer a few questions for our blog and she was pleased to do so. Below are some questions myself and Skyla11377 asked her.
Wanda: What was your inspiration behind writing "Fade To Black"?
"They say that you should write what you know. And I know news. I worked in the news industry for nearly 10 years. It's a fast-paced and exciting industry with deadlines that consist of "I need that in 30 seconds!" Rich and Kate's relationship developed along the way and there were many moments I wondered if they would truly ever be happy."
Wanda: How long did it take for you to finish writing "Fade To Black"?
"First word to publication, Fade to Black was probably a year and a half. There was about four months in there where kids were home and I didn't work on it much, though."
Wanda: Was this book based on any experience or story you ever worked on while your worked as a journalist? The book was based on generalities, no specific person or story idea was used. The newsroom in Fade to Black does resemble one of the ones I worked in, though. I worked with some great News Directors over the years, but never was one as nice as Dale ... LOL!
Wanda: What did you dream of being an author when you were young?
"Honestly, no. Tragic story ... When I was in 8th grade, we were asked to write a story. It was a big part of our grade. I was really excited and turned it in. The teacher returned it, full of red marks, and a big ol' D on the top. Her notes said that it was horribly written and that the characters lacked realism. I didn't write again, until about three years ago. From the feedback I've gotten from my readers now, I've improved *grins*"
skyla11377: What was the scariest part about writing your debut novel?
"It's the scariest thing I've ever done! Fade to Black is like a baby that I'm presenting to the world. It's truly putting yourself out there for whatever criticism people feel like throwing at you. Luckily, the majority of feedback I've gotten has been really positive. People love Rich and Kate and Jesse--and even Shea."
skyla11377: How much of yourself or people that you know, if any, did you put into your characters?
"I didn't think I put much of myself into the story. However, some of my close friends have picked out phrases or manuerisms that they say are "me". As for the rest of the characters, I'll never tell ... LOL!"
skyla11377: If you were stuck on a deserted island what 5 must have items would you have?
My family, of course. My laptop, with unlimited battery life. My bulldog, Gus. He's the greatest dog in the world, and my family would miss him horribly. Sunscreen because I tend to burn (blame it on the red hair). And I dont' think I could live without a floating library stocked with all my favorite authors!
skyla11377: What do you have coming up next (i.e. another book, or perhaps a book signings)?
"My mind is forever weaving new plots in my head. Unfortunately, having four children isn't conducive for a lot of writing time. I'm writing a short story (25,000 wrods) for a contest. I'm working on editing the first novel in an upcoming vampire series."
