Melting The Millionaire's Heart by Linda Morris -- Interview/Giveaway

Tell us a little about yourself and your latest/upcoming release.

Thanks so much for having me here at Good Choice Reading today. My latest release is a novella from Entangled called Melting the Millionaire's Heart. It's a funny, sexy, and sweet story about two strangers who end up snowed in together. (Snowed-in stories are some of my favorites -- there's something so romantic about the idea of having to spend time with someone that maybe you normally wouldn't, and then finding something to love about that person.) In Melting the Millionaire's Heart, the heroine, Kayla, has a bad attitude toward the millionaire whose estate she is traveling to when her car slides off the road in a snowstorm. Her boss has told her to kiss up to this unknown donor to encourage him to give money to the school for special-needs kids where she teaches. Based on past experience with other donors, she suspects the guy is probably a wealthy blowhard making a donation to the school for PR purposes. She's rescued by a handsome stranger, little dreaming that he is in fact the donor she's come to meet. He doesn't admit it, either, which leads to all sorts of complications as their attraction to one another grows!

Do you read reviews of your books? What do you do when you read a not-so-nice one?

I do read reviews, although I may have to revise that policy if I'm going to keep writing and preserve my sanity. This may sound nuts, but when I get a bad review, I look up bad reviews for books I love. It could be a recent romance I really enjoyed, an all-time keeper, or a classic by Austen or Dickens. No matter how much I adored the book, I can always find bad reviews for it. It's a good reminder that some people just want different things out of a book than I do, and that no book pleases everyone.

What's the one piece of technology you can't live without?

My laptop with Internet connection. I'm not actually all that fond of cell phones, and although I enjoy reading on my Kindle, I often still read print books too. But if I have to go too long without checking my favorite blogs, Goodreads, Twitter, and so on, I get a little itchy.

If you could choose one book cover to put on your wall as a poster, what would it be?

The cover for Melting the Millionaire's Heart, which was designed by my editor at Entangled, Heather Howland. Heather's covers have won numerous contests, and no wonder. She's awesome!

Do you have a book in your house that's just destroyed because you've read it so much?

I've been lugging around my favorite keepers from the late 80s/90s by Patricia Gaffney and Laura Kinsale for years -- I've reread them heavily and they're in pretty bad shape! I don't mind, though. A book so good that you read it again and again--what could be better than that?

How much of the characters are based on your traits or someone you know personally?

I wouldn't say any of my characters are based directly on myself or anyone I know, but most of my heroines start off somewhat less-than-confident, and that's true of me as well. I don't think I could relate to a brash, full-of-herself heroine who's always sure she's right.

How many times were you turned down form a book offer before you finally got published?

My first book, Forget-Me-Not, was bought by the third publisher I submitted it to. Most people think you never have to worry about rejections again after you're published, but that's not true. I wrote Melting the Millionaire's Heart specifically for an Entangled call for submissions, but other books I've written since being first published have been rejected multiple times. Your work has to be at a certain standard of quality to be publishable, but once you reach that threshold, it's really about getting your work on the right agent's or editor's desk at the right time. You need a little luck to go along with all your hard work to be a success.

What are you working on now?

I have a finished category contemporary romance that I'm shopping around now, and I'm working on a follow-up to Melting the Millionaire's Heart right now. It's Carolyn's story.

Can you share a teaser of your book with our readers?

Sure, here's a short scene when Kayla and Ryan have taken shelter together to ride out the storm. The power is out, so they're roasting some hot dogs and making s'mores over the fireplace:

A dimple appeared in his left cheek. Whoa, he was adorable. If her mother hadn’t raised her right, she’d be tempted to lean forward right now and explore that cute little indentation with the tip of her tongue. Maybe she would, later—she couldn’t rule it out.

She finished off her hot dog. Should she have another?

No, the s’mores beckoned. “I’ll do the honors for dessert. I’ll have you know I’m a s’mores expert.” She stuck a couple of big marshmallows on the end of her skewer and held them over the fire. The sonorous tones of the grandfather clock announced eleven o’clock.

“Really?” He leaned back on the hearth rug, propping himself up on his hands. The position showed off his long, leanly muscled thighs. “And where did you come by this expertise?”

“Years of relentless training in the Brownies and Girl Scouts.”

“Ah. Sounds grueling.”

“It was,” she said. “I made sacrifices and suffered a lot. In the end, it was worth it because I became a Jedi master of marshmallow toasting.”

“Do tell,” he said, his white teeth flashing in the firelight.

The sight gave her a pang somewhere very near her heart.

God, she really liked this guy.

Interview with Katie Salidas Author of "House of Immortal Pleasures" and "Halloween Fantasies"

Author of the hot new Urban Fantasy series, Immortalis, Katie has always had a desire to entertain. Since, early childhood, she's dreamed up fantastical characters and scribbled them into pages of various journals and notebooks. Taking an interest in vampires at an early age, she devoured every book, featuring those mysterious, blood sucking creatures, in any genre she could find. She claims that, of all the monsters out there, vampires had always been the most interesting.
It was only natural that a love of reading about vampires, and a love of writing, turned into a desire to write her own stories.
A Las Vegas native, having grown up in the famed City of Sin, Katie loves to feature it as a recurring setting for many of her stories.

Interview with Katie Salidas:

What was your inspiration behind writing vampire erotica books?

Honestly enough I don’t set out to write erotica. I get an idea for a story and it blooms on its own from there. I’m a self-proclaimed pantser which means I just free write and let the muse take over.

A lot of my ideas come from asking questions. For example, in Immortalis Carpe Noctem (my first novel), I really wanted to explore the change. What would it really be like to turn into a vampire? What hardships would the main character have to overcome? That is what really drove me to complete the novel. As I answered each question, more popped into my head.

In House of Immortal Pleasures, I wanted to know if vampires could be “good guys” and actually help someone. Connor is a vampire but he is more human than some real humans. He has a soul and wants to redeem himself. Since it’s an erotic romance I asked myself, how could he take his position and heal Daphne’s broken heart.

In Halloween Fantasies, I asked the question: what if some of the costumed creatures at Halloween parties, weren’t all in costume? How much fun could you have if you met a real life creature of the night?

Have you always known you wanted to be an author?

I’ve always loved to write and I have always loved vampires. It was just a natural thing to make up my own stories about them. When I was 14 I wrote my first vampire story. Sadly though I lost all of the pages I’d written during my move to Las Vegas. It might have made a good YA book back then. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Immortalis Carpe Noctem is the second full story I’d ever attempted about vampires and since then I’ve found more and more inspiration to keep writing about those creatures of the night.

What made you open up your own publishing company?

After I was laid off at my old job, I had a lot of free time on my hands and very little new job prospects. I’d spent a lot of time trying to hunt down agents and editors and collected quite a few rejection letters. Most of the letters had the same lukewarm response: Nice idea but the market is flooded right now with Paranormal fiction and Vampires. While they are “in” it doesn’t guarantee a publishing contract. In fact it is actually harder to break into the market traditionally when you write something that is so “in.”

I realized there was another option out there. I could do it myself. After a heart to heart with my husband, he gave me the nudge to “give this a shot.” Rather than go the Lulu or Iuniverse route, I wanted to try and make this 100% my own, so my husband and I started Rising Sign Books, LLC.

Self publishing is often thrown around like a dirty word. It’s actually a lot harder than you think. True self-publishing means doing everything yourself. And there is a ton of steps involved in self-publishing.

Do you plan on publishing work from other authors?

Right now I’m still really learning the market. There is a ton of things involved in publishing and marketing books. I want to be able to do it right if I’m going to be working with other authors. I don’t feel confident enough yet to start working with other others but I do hope to be able to expand Rising Sign Books, LLC in the next year or so.

Do you plan on making a sequel to "House of Immortal Pleasures"? (I hope so)

I’ve had a few inquiries about this being turned into a novella series. Many people have fallen in love with Connor and want to know what happens next. When I wrote it I intentionally left it open-ended to allow for expansion. At this point I have a few ideas swimming around in my head. Let’s face it; a vampire-run brothel does open the doors for lots of sexy stories.

What can we readers look forward in the near future from you?

The sequel to Immortalis Carpe Noctem is in final editing right now. It’s due to be published in January 2011.

Here is a quick blurb…

Immortalis: Hunters & Prey.
When Alyssa was turned she was told she could never again see her mortal friends. She was resigned to this fate, until a chance run in with Santino Vitale, thought to be dead, causes her to rely on a mortal friend for protection, trusting that no hunter would attack in public.

By doing so she has broken vampire law and finds out that divulging vampire secrets harms everyone involved. Because of her actions, she's now drawn her friend into the struggle between vampires and hunters, a fact that has her clan calling for punishment.

But there are bigger dangers looming on the horizon, more pressing than a mere mortals knowledge of vampires. The Acta Sanctorum is ready to attack again. It will take everyone, working together and an unlikely truce, to fight against the newest threat, the Frenzy Soldiers.

What kinds of books do you enjoy reading?

I’m a big fan of Urban Fantasy and Paranormal romance. I just love devouring stories about vampires, werewolves, shape shifters, etc… I’m currently working my way through the Sookie Stackhouse series from Charlaine Harris. I loved the True Blood TV show, I just had to pick up the books.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not writing?

When I’m not writing, it’s all about my family. I’ve got a wonderful daughter and husband and they are my world.

Interview with Morgan Kearns author of "Fade To Black"

I read "Fade To Black" By Morgan Kearns and the book was sooo good. During my read, I was in contact with Morgan and told her about my progress and what part of her book I was at. And when I finished reading the book, she took a few minutes out to discuss her books and characters. She is so sweet and so down to earth. So I took the chance and asked her if she would be available to answer a few questions for our blog and she was pleased to do so. Below are some questions myself and Skyla11377 asked her.

Wanda: What was your inspiration behind writing "Fade To Black"?
"They say that you should write what you know. And I know news. I worked in the news industry for nearly 10 years. It's a fast-paced and exciting industry with deadlines that consist of "I need that in 30 seconds!" Rich and Kate's relationship developed along the way and there were many moments I wondered if they would truly ever be happy."

Wanda: How long did it take for you to finish writing "Fade To Black"?
"First word to publication, Fade to Black was probably a year and a half. There was about four months in there where kids were home and I didn't work on it much, though."

Wanda: Was this book based on any experience or story you ever worked on while your worked as a journalist?
The book was based on generalities, no specific person or story idea was used. The newsroom in Fade to Black does resemble one of the ones I worked in, though. I worked with some great News Directors over the years, but never was one as nice as Dale ... LOL!

Wanda: What did you dream of being an author when you were young?
"Honestly, no. Tragic story ... When I was in 8th grade, we were asked to write a story. It was a big part of our grade. I was really excited and turned it in. The teacher returned it, full of red marks, and a big ol' D on the top. Her notes said that it was horribly written and that the characters lacked realism. I didn't write again, until about three years ago. From the feedback I've gotten from my readers now, I've improved *grins*"

skyla11377: What was the scariest part about writing your debut novel?
"It's the scariest thing I've ever done! Fade to Black is like a baby that I'm presenting to the world. It's truly putting yourself out there for whatever criticism people feel like throwing at you. Luckily, the majority of feedback I've gotten has been really positive. People love Rich and Kate and Jesse--and even Shea."

skyla11377: How much of yourself or people that you know, if any, did you put into your characters?
"I didn't think I put much of myself into the story. However, some of my close friends have picked out phrases or manuerisms that they say are "me". As for the rest of the characters, I'll never tell ... LOL!"

skyla11377: If you were stuck on a deserted island what 5 must have items would you have?
My family, of course. My laptop, with unlimited battery life. My bulldog, Gus. He's the greatest dog in the world, and my family would miss him horribly. Sunscreen because I tend to burn (blame it on the red hair). And I dont' think I could live without a floating library stocked with all my favorite authors!

skyla11377: What do you have coming up next (i.e. another book, or perhaps a book signings)?
"My mind is forever weaving new plots in my head. Unfortunately, having four children isn't conducive for a lot of writing time. I'm writing a short story (25,000 wrods) for a contest. I'm working on editing the first novel in an upcoming vampire series."

Copies of Fade to Black are available on my website, currently with free shipping.

I want to send a huge THANK YOU to Skyla11377 and the crew at GCR for this opportunity. You guys are awesome! Thank you for taking the time to review FADE TO BLACK! ~Morgan

- Thank you Morgan for taking the time to answer some of our questions! We cannot wait to get lost inside of your other books. Looking forward to it! :0)
